YOU ARE DAMNED, WE ARE SAVED

You are Damned, We are Saved

1. In this essay I think I would read about two kinds of people, the ones that are saved and the ones that are damned. I think it will also talk about how some people are saved and how others are damned.

2. Why did a small white minority dominated the black majority?

3. Possessors, Strike, Close-knit.

4. "It is easy for me now to say "group animal" or "the social animal." It is commonplace now to say we human beings were animals, and a great deal of our behavior is rooted in past animal behaviour."

          A. I choosed this sentence because it is interesting how Lessing compared our behaviour with the behaviour of animals. I also think she compared humans with animal because now we are living in a world where many people behave like animals.

-SUMMARY-

"You Are Damned, We Are Saved"

In this chapter You are Damned, We Are Saved by Doris Lessing she tell us that she grew up in a country where the white minority dominated the black majority. Where she lived, the white people treated the blacks as ugly and ignorants. Even though if some white people didn't agree with the others, they had to show them that they fell the same as the minority. White people were not able to support the blacks even if they wanted to. In this chapters Doris Lessing mentions that if you are a member of a close-knit community, you know you differ from this community's ideas at the risk of being seen as a no-goodnik, a criminal, an evil-doer. Also she said that we should find ways to educate and teach our children to strengthen the minority. She compared ourselves with animals because they behave as we do, also a great deal of our behavior is rooted in past animal behavior. Therefore Doris Lessing talks about some wars where if the people did not agree or support their cause, they would be exiled or punished accordingly. Doris Lessing believes that people coming after us will marvel that on the one hand we accumulated more and more information about our behavior, while on the other, we made no attempt at all to use it to improve our lives.
